How to Make The Best Taco Salad!

Tacos are so many people’s favourite food, so here is a taco salad recipe that will please every taco lover out there. It’s easy, customizable and best of all, very delicious. As you know, I love creating recipes that you can customize. For this taco recipe, you can use chicken, beef, tofu, fish or shrimp. For the toppings, you can add whatever veggies you like in a taco and be as creative as you like!

Are Taco Salads Healthy?

That is a great question! The things that makes a salad healthy or not really depends on the ingredients you are putting into the salad and also the dressing. For this recipe, there is actually no extra dressing since you have the sour cream, creamy avocado, and the sauce from the taco seasoning. Since no additional salad dressing is necessary, it creates a recipe that is automatically a lot healthier. As for how healthy the toppings are, well that really depends on what you end up putting on it! The way I have created the recipe, it is actually very healthy! So go crazy and eat a huge bowl of this salad!

Depending on the ingredients you use, the salad is actually keto friendly, paleo, low carb, low fat and even gluten free.

Making Taco Salad Ahead of Time

This is another reason to love the recipe, you can definitely make it ahead of time. I like to prep all my veggies (except for the avocados) and put them into separate containers. You can also cook your meat or tofu with the taco seasoning ahead of time. Once you are ready to eat, you can mix the salad together and add freshly cut avocados. This is a great meal to prep ahead of time so you always have a healthy option when you are hungry. And also great to bring to your next pot luck!

Healthy taco salad

How to Make The Best Taco Salad!

  • 1 lb Protein of your choice (Beef, chicken, tofu, seafood)
  • 2 tablespoon Taco Seasoning
  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1 head Romaine Lettuce (washed, dried, chopped)
  • 1/4 cup Red onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes (sliced in half)
  • 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese (or any type of cheese you like)
  • 1-2 avocados sliced (you can use more or less depending on how big they are)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream


  • Marinate your protein of choice in 2 tablespoon of taco seasoning. Best to leave it ovenight to marinate but a few hours will do.
  • In a cast iron on medium heat, heat up some oil and cook your marinated protein until cooked.
  • While the protein is cooking, assemble your salad in a large bowl.
  • Add lettuce, onions, cherry tomatoes, cheese, avocado, and sour cream to large bowl
  • Top with your cooked protein, toss and enjoy!
