Homemade Pita bread

A lot of people find bread making very scary and never even try to dabble into bread making! Fear not friends, making bread is actually a very simple task. The proofing takes some time but other than that, this recipe for homemade pita bread is easy, delicious and you will change your views on bread making forever (for the positive!).

Most breads are essentially a combination of yeast and flour. For hundreds of years, all different cultures made bread in their own way but the basic fundamental of combining yeast and flour together never really changed.

This recipe is no different so get your yeast and flour ready! Its bread making time!

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup all purpose flour sifted
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (and a little more when you coat the bowl while proofing and for the pan when you cook the pita bread)
  • 1 cup all purpose flour sifted (Might knead (haha) a little more depending on how dry the dough is)

Directions:

  • In a stand mixer, mix together yeast, 1 cup flour and 1 cup warm water and set aside for 15 minutes (or until you see the yeast bubbling)
  • Into the bowl with the yeast mixture, add salt, olive oil and remaining flour and mix together in the stand mixer with your dough attachment
  • Once it comes together as a dough ball (you may need to add more flour if your dough is sticky), lightly oil the bowl and place dough ball inside. Cover with a warm moist towel and set aside to proof for 2 hours. (try to find a warm place)
  • Once the dough have doubled in size (approx 2 hours later), divide the dough into 6 to 10 smaller dough balls. (Depending on how big you want your pita bread to be)
  • Heat up your cast iron pan to medium and warm up some olive oil
  • Roll out each dough ball until they are about 1/4 inch thick
  • Once the pan is hot, pan fry each pita bread until it bubbles and turns a nice golden brown (This will take approximately 1 minute on each side if your pan is hot enough)

And viola, you did it! You made bread! Congrats on overcoming your fear of bread making! Now wasn’t that easy?

Once you taste it, you will definitely want to continue making bread yourself! This homemade pita bread is great to eat with hummus or you can use it as the bread for a sandwich! Or just nibble on it as is!
