If you are a fan of fried chicken, collard greens, grits and delicious southern cuisine, you don’t need to jump on a plane, just head over to Hamilton! That’s right, Uncle Ray’s is now opened in the heart of downtown Hamilton and it is becoming one of Hamilton’s hottest new restaurant.
They describe their menu as food with soul and liquor with love! The restaurant design is modern and stylish with a beautiful bar, dining room and even a private space for your next party.
The menu includes everything from chicken and waffles, oysters, to even burgers. They have an extensive bar menu as well if you like to grab a cocktail. But if you are stopping by Uncle Ray’s, I highly recommend you try their fried chicken.
I was lucky enough to dine with Diane aka the wonderful Hamilton Spectator Food Reviewer and we were super excited to try as many dishes as possible. We took the server’s recommendation to try their famous deviled eggs as an appetizer. She also recommended that we order the chicken and waffle dish with some of their highly popular sides; grits, collard greens, and coleslaw. We also had to try their succotash! And for dessert, we had their buttermilk soft serve ice cream.
Let’s talk about their fried chicken – OMG is it ever good! The chicken was not greasy at all! It was full of flavours and super juicy! The crust on the chicken was simply amazing, light, crispy – everything you look for in a good fried chicken dish.
The sides were superb as well. They were pretty large for a side items and the server explained that they like to encourage a family style dining experience. My favourite side item had to be the grits. The grits were made with white corn, white cheddar, grass fed butter and hot honey (which is made in house)! The grass fed butter tasted phenomenal and you can really taste it in the grits!
The dessert was delicious as well! I love the sweet and spicy combination and the contrast in texture from the soft serve ice cream with the popcorn was outstanding. It took awhile for it to come out, so you might want to order this ahead of time if you are looking to order this dessert.
Overall, the dining experience and food here was AMAZING! I would highly recommend you go check them out! They recently opened a location in Toronto as well!
